Annual Events

Chapter Presidents' Retreat

Each year we begin the fall semester by gathering ourfearless leaders, also known as chapter and council presidents, at our Annual Presidents’ Retreat to get them fired up for the upcoming school year. This event engages each of our presidents in a day of community building, leadership development, education, and fun. The students spend time getting to know each other across councils and participate in activities that will better prepare them for their tenure as a chapter and/or council president. Information pertaining to university and national policies is disseminated along with other helpful university resources that will assist them in being successful. Presidents participate in tough conversations about accountability and the challenging yet rewarding journey they are about to embark upon. The day is packed with useful information and facilitates the development of critical support networks for our students.

Council Executive Board Retreat

Each spring semester the newly elected council executive board members spend a day and a half away from Duke's campus engaging in personal reflection while also learning about each other and the four Greek governing councils. This retreat focuses on peer education, teamwork, and inter/intra council collaboration. The students spend time educating each other about their Greek experience and participating in brainstorming activities that lead to exciting new programming ideas for the upcoming school year. Bonding as a council as well as a Greek community is one of the most rewarding outcomes of this retreat. The students leave with new information as well as new friends that span the Greek community.

Order of Omega Greek Awards

The Greek Awards Ceremony is an effort to recognize those Greek chapters and their members who are making a positive impact in the Greek, University and Durham communities as leaders, scholars and innovators. It is essential for the health and longevity of Greek Life at Duke that we applaud the efforts of those who make Fraternity and Sorority life as rewarding as possible. The Greek Awards Banquet takes place in the spring semester. Members of Order of Omega determine the award recipients and also host the banquet. For a list of recent and past award recipients click here.

Greek Weekend - "Fewer Days, More Fun!"

Greek Weekend is a time in the fall semester when members of the fraternity and sorority community come together to show their Greek pride. Past events include the freshman barbeque on west campus, Order of Omega Greek Bowl trivia competition, Gala at the Gardens, field day competition, and Habitat for Humanity service project. The dates for 2009 are October 8-11. The weekend of events is coordinated by a representative from each of the four governing councils. For more information please contact one of the following representatives:

Ben Klitus, Interfraternity Council
Tiffany Lin, Inter-Greek Council
Cadene Russell, National Pan-Hellenic Council
Caryn Schorr, Panhellenic Association
Anne Corey, Panhellenic Association

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is an annual service project completed by members of the four Greek governing councils and any interested non-Greek students. In the past there have been approximately 175-200 volunteers participating in this day-long blitz of building,  painting and cleaning houses being constructed within the Durham community. The councils also hold fundraising events during the spring and fall semesters to support future Habitat for Humanity efforts. The Habitat for Humanity project takes place during Greek Week in the fall semester. The event is organized by a community service chair from one of the four Greek governing councils, with assistance from the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life.

Halloween Carnival

The Halloween Carnival is an annual service project held at the Duke Children’s Hospital. For this event, members of the Greek community dress up in full costume to interact and engage with patients of the hospital and their families. Activities include but are not limited to face painting, “fishing” for prizes, making crafts such as masks, searching through a “haystack” for toys, bowling, playing board games, and much more. The Halloween Carnival usually takes place on a weekday prior to Halloween. The event is organized by a community service chair from one of the four Greek governing councils, with assistance from the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life.

Holiday Appreciation Baskets

Each year Holiday Baskets are given to the residential housekeeping staff on East and West Campus to show appreciation for their hard work throughout the year. For this project, each Greek chapter is asked to purchase a list of items that the recipients can use to make holiday recipes. This past year a representative of each chapter brought the supplies to an on campus location where they had a “basket line” and members of each of the four councils put the items together and wrapped them up to be delivered. The Holiday Appreciation Baskets are typically handed out at the end of November. The event is organized by a community service chair from one of the four Greek governing councils, with assistance from the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life.

AFLV (formerly MGCA)

Networking is a large benefit of being involved in a Greek organization. To encourage this as well as provide our students with the premiere educational resources available in the fraternity and sorority life community we take a select group of council leaders to the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values' annual conference. This year's conference will be held in St. Louis, Missouri from February 11th-14th. The students spend 3 days and 4 nights attending educational sessions and speakers while getting to know members of the Greek community from all over the country.  The students return to Durham, NC with a wealth of information that aids them in being a capable, effective, and resourceful council executive board member. Duke Greek Emerging Leaders (DGEL)

DGEL is the new and improved Duke Greek Emerging Leaders program. Duke Greek Emerging Leaders serves as the premiere leadership development program for Greeks on Duke’s campus. Students attend six educational sessions throughout the fall semester with the focus of leading positive change in the fraternity and sorority life community.
