Inter-Greek Council Constitution

Preamble
We, the undersigned organizations, have joined together to form this council known as the Inter-Greek Council at Duke University in order to better meet our individual and joint needs and voice our concerns. We recognize that there are certain areas of action and programming that can be best carried out by the joint efforts of all of our organizations. We do hereby establish such an organization and bind ourselves to abide by the provision of the following constitution and bylaws.
Article I - Name
The name of this organization shall be the Inter-Greek Council at Duke University hereinafter referred to as the IGC at Duke University.
Article II - Purpose and Objectives
The primary purpose of this organization is to bring together its member organizations through the following means:
- Increasing awareness and knowledge of each member organization by:
- Creating forums for discussion on topics that are of concern to its member organizations.
- Providing information about member organizations for the purpose of educating the University or any other interested party.
- Providing information about member organizations for the purpose of educating the University or any other interested party.
- Promoting community service projects that support the University or Durham area, as well as bringing together member organizations.
- Encouraging cooperation and developing a support network among the member organizations by creating an open environment for the sharing of information.
- Mediating disputes that may arise between member organizations or other campus groups.
- Fostering cooperation withother Greek organizations such as the Interfraternity Council (IFC),Panhellenic Association (Panhel), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and any other student organizations.
Article III - Authority
The scope of authority of the Inter-Greek Council shall be to program, legislate, administrate, and advise. The Council shall have the power to regulate all matters of organizational interest. Authority for the IGC is derived through recognition by the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
Article IV - Structure
- There shall be a General Body consisting of one Delegate from each recognized IGC chapter at Duke University. This group will have final authority on all matters related to this Council, in accordance with University guidelines.
- There shall be an Executive Board, subject in all respects to the General Body of the Inter-Greek Council.
- Undergraduate chapters of the Inter-Greek Council shall be comprised of college/university national and local fraternities and sororities.
Article V - Membership
- The following organizations shall be charter members of the IGC:
- Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority Inc.
- Omega Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
- Lambda Phi Epsilon Asian Interest Fraternity
- La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc.
- Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc.
- Additional groups shall be added following completion of requirements as described in Article VI of the Inter-Greek Council By-Laws.
- In order to remain in active status, a member organization shall maintain at least a 2.000 cumulative Grade Point Average among its active members and be in good standing financially with the University and with the IGC at Duke University.
- Upon satisfactory completion of member requirements from the previous semester, membership for each organization shall be automatically renewed at the beginning of each academic year unless there are outstanding circumstances as determined by the Executive Board of the Inter-Greek Council.
Article VI – Officers
- The following positions are to be elected by the General Body: President, Director of Administration and Order, Director of Expansion and Finance, Director of Programming, Director of Public Relations, and Director of Philanthropy.
- The following position is to be interviewed and appointed by the Executive Board: Greek Conduct Board Chair.
- The Council shall have a primary advisor as a representative from the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
Article VII - Committees
- The Council President or the position Director, with the approval of the President, may establish any committees necessary to carry out the programs of the Council.
Article VIII – Scheduling of Events
- No other constituent IGC organization may schedule events in conflict with official IGC events.
Article IX – Conduct Board
- The Greek Conduct Board will be responsible for matters involving Council regulations and organization disputes. In addition, violations by members may result in additional disciplinary action in accordance with University conduct policies.
- All organizations must abide by any sanctions levied by the Greek Conduct Board.
- An organization can be penalized for an action or non action if such action violates University policy, Council policy, or the policies of its respective organization.
Article X – Amendments
- Amendments to the Constitution and By-laws may be proposed in writing by any Delegate of member organizations in good standing or the Executive Board of the Inter-Greek Council.
- Proposed amendments shall be submitted to the Executive Board during a General Body Meeting.
- Within 24 hours of submission, the sponsor shall forward an electronic copy of the proposed amendment to all Executive and General Body Members.
- During the next General Body Meeting, the sponsor of the proposed amendment shall have five minutes to present, which will be followed by debate that will occur in accordance with Roberts Rules of Order.
- The proposed amendment will be voted upon during that meeting.
- The Executive Board shall only make recommendations to the proposed amendments.
- Amendments shall be adopted by a 2/3 vote of the General Body
- In the event of an emergency the President may make changes to the constitution with the consent of the OFSL advisor. This change will remain in effect until the next GBM is held at which point it must receive a 2/3 vote to be permanently adopted into the constitution. Failure to receive 2/3 will result in the Constitution being reverted to its original form.
